Lighting Canada's most sustainable community, Sifton's West5 with Solar LED Street Lighting

What better way to light Canada's most sustainable community, Sifton’s West5, in London Ontario, than to do so with Solar LED street lighting provided by Frederick & Simon Inc. and ClearWorld LLC.?

Frederick & Simon Inc. is very pleased to announce the contract award for solar RetroFlex LED streetlights for the West5 Townhouse development currently under construction in London, Ontario by Sifton Properties Ltd.

This order is the second phase of a commercial assessment being performed by Sifton into the viability of the Solar RetroFlex Lighting System. The streetlights will be supplied with 320W solar panels and 1.8kWhr lithium ion batteries with integral charge controllers as well as 20ft steel powder coated poles. The solar lights will be used as part of the lighting system that illuminates the 70-unit townhouse complex.

The solar LED lights are completely off-grid and rely solely on the energy provided from the sun. The lights maintain a battery capacity of approximately two weeks in the event of prolonged rainy and cloudy conditions. The solar RetroFlex units will be installed early this summer during the construction phase of the project.

The revolutionary lights are designed to produce electricity via a photovoltaic panel that wraps around a standard light pole. The cylindrical panel houses a lithium ion battery and wireless control unit. The SMART lights have the capability to operate completely off grid thereby reducing electricity costs and reducing carbon footprint for the operators such as municipalities, property developers/owners and utility companies. As well, the lights have the capability to operate for 15 days in cloudy conditions, notify operators when there is a fault and generate electricity to feed back into the grid.

“Frederick & Simon Inc. is very pleased to have achieved this milestone today for ClearWorld and Sifton Properties. We look forward to bringing this innovative technology, which can significantly reduce municipal electricity costs and carbon footprint, to many more developers and municipalities in Canada” says Marc Sidhom, Cofounder of Frederick & Simon Inc. “For many municipalities, roadway lighting can represent as much as 40% of their electrical cost. This design is a game changer for municipal lighting; it’s robust, elegant, cost effective and, as the City Commissioner for the City of Miami recently said in reference to the ClearWorld product, “….it’s as simple as planting a tree, instead of making oxygen from the sun, it makes electricity.”

The Mississauga unit is intended to be the first of many units to be installed in Ontario and other provinces for SMART developments. This energy technology is closely aligned with the Ontario Energy Board's and the Ministry of Energy's effort to achieve additional energy conservation and demand management within the province of Ontario.  This lighting solution is ideal for SMART development projects, conservation, cost reduction efforts, remote & off-grid locations such as parks, mining sites and for all municipal roadway or parking applications.

“We are very excited to be the first company in Canada to select this solar lighting solution for evaluation.” said Philip Masschelein, VP Neighbourhood Developments for Sifton Properties.  “As leaders in the adoption of technologies suited for SMART residential and commercial developments; Sifton consistently demonstrates its commitment to SMART energy use.  Our West 5 community under development in London is an example of this commitment and we are pleased to be involved in bringing this technology to the region.”

SaaS Enhances Client Capture within Distributed Generation

SaaS Enhances Client Capture within Distributed Generation

Distributed Generation [DG] continues to evolve in Ontario. We see progressive examples, in our marketplace, of multiple utility pilot projects that are underway.  These projects will combine rooftop solar technology, EV charging, & energy storage dispersed throughout the grid and all connected, managed, controlled and analyzed by a software-as-a-service [SaaS] platform.  The most recent example is with Veridian Connections’ announcement of a micro grid pilot project that will be commissioned in the first half of 2016.

PowerStream earlier announced plans to test a mico grid system involving rooftop solar, energy storage and a cloud based SaaS energy management system from Sunverge Energy Inc. This pilot will involve 20 residential locations...

Elon Musk and IMF's Lagarde speak the same language on carbon tax … just with a different tone.

Both, Elon Musk and the IMF's managing director, Christine Lagarde are speaking the same language when it comes to carbon tax. Musk believes strongly that carbon emitters have been operating with a "hidden subsidy" deprived of a legitimate carbon tax to help quell pollution. A carbon tax could potentially take the form of a “revenue neutral” tax—balanced by lower taxes elsewhere. Waiting any longer "is the dumbest experiment in history," according to Musk. Lagarde, is also promoting a "wise tax" for carbon … "With a fairer carbon price, energy savings will be encouraged and demand strengthened for cleaner energy sources and 'greener' investments." Elon Musk's Carbon Tax ConceptIMF's Lagarde - "Wise Tax". I am glad to know that Ontario legislators share a similar objective, which should bolster our investment in cleaner technologies. -Read on further for some additional insights. Ontario Cap and Trade

Energy Storage Trending Favourably in US, Ontario Close Behind

Energy Storage Trending Favourably in US, Ontario Close Behind

It’s optimistic to see energy storage projects like these take place in the US market. I would expect more energy storage projects to take root in Ontario, especially following the recent procurement of 50MW energy storage by the IESO. The Ontario Global Adjustment charge should enhance the business case for energy arbitrage from storage compared with a lot of US jurisdictions. WHY FOCUS ON REVENUE?

As the economic engine of a business, revenue allows companies to fund its operations. Without revenue there is no business. If you’re loosing accounts and not gaining enough new clients then focus should not just land on cost cutting but rather plugging the gaps, and then filling the bucket.  10% of revenue growth goes farther than 10% of cost cutting.

WHAT TYPICALLY HAPPENS WHEN REVENUE STAGNATES?

Organizations often look to short term solutions. Leaders are rewarded for short term performance. Missing the profit line results in loss of confidence, affected employees, reduced marketing budgets and more.

WHAT IS GOOD SUSTAINABLE GROWTH REALLY ABOUT?

It is growth that is a result of an enterprise effort, where there is alignment to strategy, availability of the right tools to increase sales force effectiveness, clear goals, consistent measurement and organizational support throughout.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE BOTH SHORT AND LONG TERM FOCUS?

Balancing investments in time and resources to ensure that all phases of an organization’s lifecycle are addressed.
